I have encountered very few issues with inflatable sleeping pads throughout my testing. While some have experienced minor air loss, I have never seen one completely deflate. That said, adopting a few techniques can significantly improve your sleep quality and overall trip experience.

Avoid inflating your pad by mouth: Aside from being cumbersome on oversized pads, your breath introduces warm, moisture into the nylon, which creates a favorable environment for mildew and mold. Although this risk may be somewhat overstated—some users have opened pads inflated by mouth for years without finding any mold—it is simply easier to bypass the problem entirely. Most manufacturers now include a pump sack, which makes inflation quick and effortless. Additionally, compact motorized pumps weighing merely an ounce or two, such as the Flextail, offer a convenient alternative.

Do not over-inflate: Insulated pads function by trapping air and material between your body and the cold ground, but this does not require the pad to be inflated to maximum firmness. The optimal approach varies by pad, though I generally recommend inflating it taut and then slowly releasing air while lying down to test comfort. The downside to this method is that a thinner pad increases the likelihood of bottoming out. While this is less problematic for stomach or back sleepers, side sleepers may need more time to find the ideal balance between cushioning and insulation.

Always carry a repair kit: Although most pads come with a patch kit, I rarely rely on them. Instead, I carry a compact roll of Tenacious Tape ($6), which effectively repairs rips and tears on sleeping pads, tents, and other gear. Be sure to test a small piece of tape on your pad beforehand to ensure adhesion, and use an alcohol wipe to clean the area before applying.

Women require higher R-value pads: Due to generally lower body mass, women should add approximately 1 R-value to achieve the same level of insulation as men under equivalent conditions. I also recommend increasing the R-value if you are naturally prone to feeling cold.

Sleeping bag temperature ratings assume an R5 pad: Most ratings on sleeping bags are accurate only when using a sleeping pad with an R-value of 5 or higher, assuming a base layer is worn as well. If your pad has a lower R-value, you will need to adjust your expected bag temperature accordingly. For instance, using a 30-degree quilt with an R4 pad will likely leave you uncomfortably cold in freezing temperatures. In such cases, you should either increase the pad’s R-value or choose a warmer sleeping bag.
