The Toronto Maple Leafs entered the 2026-27 season with high expectations after a busy offseason that saw the arrival of a new head coach and several key additions. However, their start has been somewhat uneven, resulting in a 3-3-1 record. While the team is currently managing a wave of injuries along the blue line, the depth they acquired during the summer was expected to absorb such setbacks.
With those ongoing injuries, however, Toronto may look to bolster their defensive depth further. One name that has recently surfaced as a potential target is Calgary Flames defenseman Zach Whitecloud.

According to reports, Toronto has already held exploratory discussions regarding a potential acquisition of Whitecloud. Insiders suggest that the previous management regime showed interest in the defenseman, and the current front office continues to view him as a viable target to strengthen their roster.
This analysis explores what a potential trade package between the Maple Leafs and Flames could look like. While interest has been reported, there is currently no indication that formal negotiations have taken place, nor is a deal considered imminent at this stage.
Maple Leafs Add Strong Player, Flames Cash In
Whitecloud is a highly reliable defenseman capable of anchoring a team’s top-four unit. Though he does not offer significant offensive production, he is a highly dependable presence capable of handling any defensive situation at any point during a game.
Over 405 career NHL games, Whitecloud has recorded 23 goals and 65 assists for 88 points. He remains scoreless through six games of the current campaign.
Calgary acquired Whitecloud from the Vegas Golden Knights in a transaction that saw Rasmus Andersson head the other way. The trade immediately proved to be a success for the Flames, highlighting just how impactful Whitecloud’s defensive playstyle can be.

For the Maple Leafs, acquiring Whitecloud would instantly resolve their defensive depth concerns. While veterans like Troy Stecher and Nick Blankenburg provide solid contributions, slotting Whitecloud into a larger role would elevate Toronto’s overall depth, potentially giving them one of the most well-rounded defensive units in the league.
In any negotiation, Calgary would likely seek a defenseman in return. However, given the Flames’ already deep and young blue line, they might be open to acquiring a prospect who is not yet fully NHL-ready.
A realistic trade proposal between the two franchises could resemble the following:
- Maple Leafs Receive: D Zach Whitecloud
- Flames Receive: D Ben Danford, Conditional 2027 1st-Round Pick (becomes a 2029 2nd-Round Pick if Whitecloud doesn’t reach a specific number of games played)
Danford, a 20-year-old prospect selected 31st overall in the 2024 NHL Draft, currently plays for the Toronto Marlies in the AHL. While he possesses significant potential, he may still be a couple of seasons away from making the leap to the NHL.
Parting with a first-round pick is a difficult decision for any franchise, which is why a conditional clause was included. This condition provides insurance against potential injuries or a decline in performance that could lead to the player being a healthy scratch, making the proposal a more viable pathway to securing a deal.
Offering a solid prospect alongside a high draft pick for a dependable defender under contract through the 2027-28 season represents a logical transaction. If Whitecloud is indeed available—as is expected as the Flames position themselves as sellers this season—the Maple Leafs present an ideal landing spot.
