A business jet crashed in a residential neighborhood in Florida on Sunday, resulting in the tragic loss of all nine individuals on board, according to the US Transport Secretary.
The incident occurred near Cresthaven, approximately nine miles (14 km) from Mar-a-Lago, the resort of former President Donald Trump, located in the affluent area of Palm Beach County, at around 12:50 EST (17:50 GMT).
Images from the scene reveal a massive crater in the center of a multi-lane roadway, surrounded by scattered fire and debris from the Learjet 60. Fortunately, no bystanders on the ground were injured in the crash.
According to a statement from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), the aircraft had departed from Austin, Texas, and was en route to the Bahamas.
Flight data analysis indicates that the jet was plummeting at a rate of hundreds of feet per second prior to impact.
In recorded air traffic control audio from moments before the crash, a voice from the cockpit can be heard reporting that the aircraft was descending at a rate of 10,000 feet (3,048 meters) per minute.
The crew member subsequently declared an emergency, shouting, “we are in an overspeed condition descending 20,000ft per minute,” and added, “we are going to crash into the ground.”
Roughly 35 seconds after the initial mayday call, the final transmission from the cockpit was heard saying, “we’re out of time.”
