The upcoming U.S. Treasury coupon settlement on September 30, valued at $202 billion, will serve as a critical test for overnight financing dynamics at quarter-end. The Federal Home Loan Bank of New York reports current market calm but cautions that increased supply may push repo borrowing rates higher. Meanwhile, Bitcoin’s potential response to these financing pressures remains an uncharted question.
The Treasury auction calendar reveals a reopened 10-year inflation-protected security alongside two-year, five-year, and seven-year notes scheduled for Wednesday’s settlement. These securities—totaling $202 billion—feature public offerings of $19 billion for TIPS, $69 billion for two-year notes, $70 billion for five-year notes, and $44 billion for seven-year notes.
While Treasury estimates $143.58 billion in publicly held coupon debt will mature on the date, the resulting net new face value stands at $58.42 billion. This metric reflects securities issued beyond maturing obligations rather than direct cash flows, as auction pricing, inflation adjustments, and Treasury spending may alter actual cash impacts. Notably, bills auctioned preceding quarter-end will settle on October 1, outside this coupon calculation.
The New York Fed’s schedule indicates approximately $15.6 billion in reinvestment purchases from September 15 to October 14, with no reserve-management purchases planned. The Fed continues replacing principal from maturing mortgage-backed securities with Treasury bills, while its separate reserve addition program remains paused. NY Fed official Roberto Perli noted on September 22 that reserves appeared sufficient and funding markets had maintained order.
Key Funding Indicators to Monitor
Secured Overnight Financing Rate (SOFR), which measures broad Treasury-backed borrowing costs, stood at 3.88% on September 24—the latest pre-event reading. This represents a modest increase from 3.85% on September 18 and 21, yet remains below the Federal Reserve’s 3.90% interest rate on bank reserves, according to FHLBNY data. Despite the upward trend, repo financing conditions were still characterized as calm.
Traders will assess whether a temporary SOFR spike dissipates quickly or persists above the Fed’s reserve rate, along with other repo metrics. For Bitcoin to react significantly, market participants would also monitor perpetual futures funding rates, futures premiums, market depth, leverage levels, and spot trading flows. Previous CryptoSlate analysis highlighted reduced derivatives exposure during a Treasury yield shock prior to this settlement, though causality with repo outcomes cannot be definitively established.
