For the second week in a row, Hawaii Island faces threats from an intensifying storm.

Tropical Storm Moke is advancing toward Hawaii with gusts of wind and heavy rain, following a similar pattern to Hurricane Lala’s impact last week. Residents on Hawaii Island are preparing for the storm, which is expected to pass south of the Big Island overnight and into the following morning.

At 11am Hawaii Standard Time, Moke was positioned approximately 684 kilometers (425 miles) south of Hilo, moving west-northwest at 19km/h (12mph). The National Hurricane Center reported sustained winds of 85km/h (50mph).

While Moke is not expected to make a direct hit on Hawaii Island, the region is still recovering from Lala’s devastation, which caused significant flooding, power outages, and at least one fatality. Heavy rainfall from Lala exceeded 1,000mm (39 inches) in some areas, overwhelming rivers and displacing electrical infrastructure.

State officials, including Governor Josh Green, have urged residents to stockpile essentials and prepare for widespread impacts. Green emphasized the compounding risks, noting: “We’ve already been hit hard, and we’re pre-positioning equipment, personnel, and shelter options for those affected.” Power outages, many concentrated in remote regions, are anticipated to resolve by September 8.

According to meteorologist Casey Oswant, Moke will continue westward after passing Hawaii, affecting the windward and southeast sides of the Big Island with limited but notable impacts. The storm could bring 130mm to 250mm (5 to 10 inches) of rain over two days, with isolated areas receiving up to 380mm (15 inches). Eastern Maui may see 76mm to 150mm (3 to 6 inches), while other islands face lesser precipitation.

Governor Green warned that the rainfall is likely to persist beyond Moke, with another storm front expected a week later. He urged caution, stating: “This storm will be followed by another front, and we remain under the effects of major weather systems impacting Hawaii.”
