Supporters staged a distinctive demonstration targeting U.S. President Donald Trump and FIFA President Gianni Infantino at the World Cup final on Sunday.
Red cards were distributed to attendees traveling to MetLife Stadium in New York and New Jersey for the Spain versus Argentina match.
Organizers of the protest are encouraging fans to raise the red cards during the trophy presentation as a sign of discontent toward Trump and Infantino, who are scheduled to award the World Cup to the winning captain.
Each red card included a QR code linked to finalredcard.com, a platform providing guidance on the timing of the display.
“After review, for political corruption and abuse of the presidency, the decision is red card!” the site stated, parodying the video assistant referee process used in matches.
Infantino and Trump have drawn significant criticism over the past two weeks after American forward Folarin Balogun’s suspension was overturned despite a red card, enabling his participation in the round-of-16 game against Belgium.
