Trump stated on Wednesday that the United States would grant Ukraine the authority to produce Patriot air‑defence missiles.
He told President Volodymyr Zelensky that the licence would allow Ukraine to manufacture Patriots, adding that this would eliminate complaints about insufficient supplies.
Zelensky has repeatedly urged the United States for the Patriot interceptors, which remain the sole system capable of intercepting Russian ballistic missiles.
Trump did not provide details on the manufacturing process for the missiles in Ukraine.
He added that production could be rapid, and that once the technology is explained, a company would be brought in to work with Ukrainian partners.
The Patriot system was created by Raytheon, while missile production is led by Lockheed Martin; both firms maintain joint ventures with the European missile manufacturer MBDA.
In contrast to earlier criticism, Trump noted that he and Zelensky have formed a strong relationship, and that both Ukraine and Russia seek to bring the war to a close.
He said, “The president wants to achieve this, and I believe President Putin also wants to achieve this, making for a constructive partnership.”
Russia’s foreign ministry condemned NATO’s decision to supply military aid to Ukraine, warning that it could have catastrophic consequences.
