Former President Donald Trump endorsed New Jersey Republican congressman Tom Kean Jr. on Monday, coinciding with the elite’s absence from public view since early March.
Kean, who last voted on the House floor on March 5, is unopposed in Tuesday’s Republican primary while Democrats selected Rebecca Bennett, a navy helicopter pilot, as their nominee. Four high-profile Democratic candidates raised over $1 million each for the November election.
Kean’s office announced in late April he was addressing a “personal medical issue” and expected his return “very soon.” He told the New Jersey Globe he would return “within the next couple of weeks.” His social media accounts remain active, posting updates from staff attending public events.
“Tom is working tirelessly to Keep our Border SECURE, Stop Migrant Crime, Grow our Economy, Cut Taxes and Regulations, Champion Small Business, Unleash American Energy DOMINANCE, Support our Brave Military and Veterans, and Protect our always under siege Second Amendment,” Trump wrote on Truth Social late Monday night.
House Speaker Mike Johnson has not been provided a return date despite private discussions with Kean, according to three Republican leadership sources cited by CNN. Republican colleagues express concern over Kean’s health and the vulnerability of holding his seat against well-funded Democratic challengers.
New Jersey law may require special procedures if Kean cannot continue serving after winning the uncontested primary, prompting discussions among party members.
Multiple staffers did not respond to requests for comment regarding whether Kean is aware of his endorsement or his current condition.
