US President Donald Trump announced on Wednesday that Iran has released Dena Karari, an American citizen detained since December 2024, allowing her to exit the country.
“She is now safely outside of Iran and in good health,” Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform, stating, “The United States of America appreciates this gesture of goodwill by Iran!”
Trump, who recently authorized renewed airstrikes against Iran and reimposed a naval blockade on its ports, did not disclose the reason for Karari’s detention, other than describing it as “wrongful confinement.”
Later Wednesday, her attorney, Jared Genser, confirmed the release in a statement: “I am thrilled to report that my client, Dena Karari, a US-Iranian national, who was detained on baseless charges of collaborating with a hostile state and espionage, is now safely out of Iran and en route to the United States.”
Genser explained that Karari was targeted due to her work with the non-profit Children of Mehr Foundation, which supported underprivileged Iranian children through private donations. He noted she was subjected to prolonged interrogations by Iran’s Ministry of Intelligence and Security under a coercive exit ban, causing severe physical and psychological distress.
Genser called for the release of all remaining detained Americans, those under coercive exit bans, and Iranian political prisoners.
Iran has historically detained Western nationals, allegedly using them as leverage in diplomatic negotiations. In May, the US secured the release of an Iranian citizen with US permanent residency after a decade-long imprisonment in Iran.
Despite signing a memorandum of understanding last month to de-escalate tensions, US-Iran relations remain strained, with renewed conflict erupting across the region.
