President Donald Trump announced on Tuesday that he is considering renaming Lake Ontario to “Lake America” as trade tensions between the United States and Canada intensify.
This proposed change would mirror Trump’s previous unilateral action last year, when he issued an executive order to rename the Gulf of Mexico as the Gulf of America.
The United States and Canada are currently engaged in a trade dispute, with Canada expected to unveil retaliatory measures on Tuesday following the Trump administration’s implementation of 50 percent tariffs on $20 billion worth of Canadian goods over the weekend after negotiations between the two nations collapsed.
“The United States is giving serious consideration to changing the name of Lake Ontario to Lake America in that we don’t expect to doing much business with Ontario any longer,” Trump stated on social media Tuesday.
Ontario, Canada’s most populous province, is home to the country’s automotive industry.
The US and Canada maintain one of the world’s largest trading relationships, with deeply intertwined supply chains spanning automotive, energy, agriculture, and manufacturing sectors, making an extended trade conflict potentially costly for businesses and workers on both sides of the border.
Prime Minister Mark Carney questioned the reliability of the US as a trading partner, stating that Canada was securing dependable partners “everywhere in the world, except in the United States. Except in the United States. And Russia.”
