US President Donald Trump confirmed plans to meet North Korean leader Kim Jong Un later this year, aiming to reinvigorate diplomatic ties he describes as previously forged during his first term.
During a White House event, Trump stated that fostering goodwill with Kim was a priority, noting Pyongyang’s current arsenal of 57 nuclear weapons—consistent with earlier US estimates of 50-60.
This renewed focus on North Korea, coupled with reduced joint military drills with South Korea, has raised concerns among regional allies while prompting speculation about Trump seeking a diplomatic milestone as his Iran-related efforts face challenges.
Defending the decision, Trump stated that despite North Korea’s nuclear capabilities—something he claims he would have prevented—his relationship with Kim remains strong, asserting, “He’s got them. I get along with him very well.”
The potential meeting may coincide with Trump’s November visit to Shenzhen, China, for the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit, though no official details have been disclosed.
While the US does not formally recognize North Korea as a nuclear state, Trump’s specific reference to 57 weapons aligns with recent intelligence assessments.
Trump’s approach contrasts with his earlier rhetoric, which included threats against North Korea. During his first term, he met Kim three times, with summit discussions yielding limited progress on denuclearization.
Additionally, Trump recently directed the Pentagon to scale back annual military exercises with South Korea, citing improved relations with Kim. He described the drills as “very insulting” to Pyongyang, which Kim Yo Jong—Kim’s sister—acknowledged was conducted at the US’s request.
North Korea has criticized these exercises as provocative, viewing them as preparations for invasion. Seoul suspended its annual Ulchi Freedom Shield drills earlier than planned following US indications, though the Pentagon maintains training objectives remain unchanged.
