US President Donald Trump warned on Thursday that Iran would face severe consequences if it is found to be behind a copilot who attempted to crash an Israel-bound flight earlier this week. The incident involved a FlyDubai passenger jet traveling from the United Arab Emirates to Tel Aviv when the Omani co-pilot allegedly attacked the Indian captain mid-flight.
The plane, which was carrying 182 passengers—mostly Israelis—was en route from Dubai to Tel Aviv when the co-pilot reportedly stabbed the captain, causing the Boeing 737 MAX 8 to plunge dramatically. Passengers intervened, subduing the assailant and helping stabilize the aircraft before it made an emergency landing in Saudi Arabia.
President Trump addressed reporters at the White House, stating, “We’re working on it right now,” regarding potential Iranian involvement. He added, “Based on what I’m hearing, the answer is yes, but we’re working on it right now.” When asked about possible US retaliation, Trump emphasized, “Oh they’ll be hit, very hard, don’t worry.”
The incident occurred around 2.5 hours into the flight, with the aircraft descending rapidly from 33,000 feet to 17,000 feet within a minute. Emergency codes were transmitted—a “7700” indicating general emergency followed by a “7500” signaling possible unlawful interference.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu described the attack without providing specifics, suggesting the perpetrator had undergone “Islamist indoctrination.” However, Netanyahu later acknowledged it was too early to confirm Iranian involvement. Israeli intelligence officials are currently in Saudi Arabia assisting with the investigation.
Investigators are exploring multiple theories, including terrorism and mental health issues, according to regional officials. The co-pilot, who has not been publicly named, was handed over to UAE authorities following the incident. Video footage showed him on his knees with hands bound behind his back.
Captain Smit Machchhar, credited with helping regain control of the aircraft, is recovering in Abu Dhabi, according to the Indian government. Four American citizens were among the passengers on board.
The attack has raised new concerns as Israel approaches the one-year anniversary of the October 7, 2023 Hamas-led assault that sparked the ongoing conflict in Gaza. Diplomatic efforts to negotiate a resolution to the war have reportedly stalled amid these developments.
Amid escalating tensions, the American military has deployed approximately 9,000 troops aboard naval vessels to the Middle East, potentially positioning three aircraft carriers in the region by late October.
