Tua Tagovailoa Returns to Miami Amid Mixed Emotions: Former Dolphins QB Reflects on Emotional Homecoming

Miami Dolphins fans greeted Tua Tagovailoa with a mixture of boos Friday night as the former franchise quarterback made his return to Hard Rock Stadium, the venue that served as his NFL home for six seasons.

However, the Atlanta Falcons quarterback emphasized that while he heard the boos, they did not diminish his appreciation for the city where he began his professional career.

“Those were probably some of the best six years of my life, being able to play for Miami and in front of these fans,” Tagovailoa said after Friday night’s preseason finale between the Dolphins and Falcons.

“Regardless of the reaction, I love the city. We have a home here. While I can’t change what happened, it was really special reconnecting with many of the guys after the game and during it. It was a cool homecoming, if you will.”

The Dolphins released Tagovailoa in March, resulting in $99.2 million in dead money against Miami’s salary cap two years after the franchise had signed him to a contract extension making him one of the highest-paid players in NFL history.

During his six seasons with Miami, Tagovailoa led the Dolphins to the playoffs twice following his selection with the No. 5 pick in the 2020 NFL Draft out of Alabama. However, he endured multiple head injuries and the team struggled during his final two seasons, posting a 15-19 record in games where he started 25 of 34 contests.

Tagovailoa’s performance declined notably in 2025, accompanied by controversial comments and eventually being benched after Miami’s 28-15 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers in Week 15.

“It wasn’t fun being in my situation,” Tagovailoa admitted. “Outside of that, I wasn’t playing up to the standard I’d established in previous years, so I understand. You have to be honest with yourself. That’s what it came down to. I appreciate how head coach Jeff Hafley and general manager Jon-Eric Sullivan handled the entire process with me.”

Currently competing with Michael Penix Jr. for Atlanta’s starting quarterback position, Tagovailoa fumbled a snap late in the first quarter that the Dolphins recovered. Otherwise, he delivered a solid performance, completing 7 of 8 passes for 95 yards.

“Tua is a professional,” said Falcons head coach Kevin Stefanski. “I thought he handled everything really well. There’s a lot of emotion when you return to a place that meant so much to you, and he managed it professionally and stayed focused on his responsibilities.”
