Baltimore-based hardcore band Turnstile made their Saturday Night Live debut the night after their Austin City Limits performance, playing songs from their Grammy-winning album Never Enough.
The group opened its set with “Birds,” the track that earned Best Metal Performance at the February Grammy Awards.
Never Enough is the band’s fourth album, following 2021’s Glow On. It won Best Rock Album at the same Grammy ceremony, in which Turnstile became the first act to receive simultaneous nominations in the Rock, Alternative, and Metal categories. A reimagined edition of the album was released in August.
Later in the broadcast, Turnstile closed with a medley of “I Care” and “Dull,” giving the performance a restless, high-energy finish.
Turnstile wrote all fourteen songs on the latest record. In a December conversation with Rolling Stone, frontman Brendan Yates said the title track had been forming in his mind for a long time.
“It was about a lot of different life experiences — about the feeling of love always falling short, or feeling like it’s falling short of having a lasting impact. This feeling of constantly chasing and constantly reaching. That can be a pattern that, if you’re stuck in it, is really hard to escape,” Yates said. “We knew right away, when that song found its form, that that was leading the way with what this record needed to be. It spoke to a lot of the last few years of our lives, since the last album.”
