Militants ambushed a security convoy and, hours later, a suicide bomber targeted a police station in coordinated assaults across northwest Pakistan on Wednesday, leaving at least three officers dead and 20 others wounded. The violence underscores a sharp escalation in the volatile region bordering Afghanistan.

The first attack unfolded in the Upper Dir district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, where gunmen ambushed a security convoy, killing three police officers and wounding 15 others, according to local police official Ibrahim Khan. Security forces returned fire, and the exchange continued for some time. Khan did not immediately confirm whether any militants were killed or wounded.

Hours later, a suicide bomber drove an explosives-laden vehicle into a police station in the city of Bannu, also in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, wounding at least five officers. The blast damaged part of the station, though no fatalities were immediately reported.

No group has claimed responsibility for either attack, though suspicion is likely to fall on the Pakistani Taliban, known as Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP). The TTP is distinct from but closely allied with Afghanistan’s Taliban. Pakistan has long accused the group of operating from sanctuaries inside Afghanistan, a charge both the TTP and the Taliban-led government in Kabul deny.
