Two 25-Year-Old Runners Die After Collapsing During Great North Run

Two men have died after collapsing during Sunday’s Great North Run.

Organisers confirmed on Monday afternoon that both runners were 25 years old and from the North East.

Passing from Newcastle’s city centre to South Shields, the Great North Run is the largest half-marathon in the world. This year’s edition drew a record 63,000 competitors amid temperatures warmer than forecasts had suggested.

“It is with deep sadness, The Great Run Company can confirm the death of two participants at yesterday’s Great North Run,” organisers said in a statement.

“The two runners, both 25-year-old males from the North East, collapsed at the event, and despite the very best efforts of our medical teams, later passed away. In each case, the cause of death will be determined in due course.”

“Everyone involved in organising the Great North Run extends their heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of the two participants. We are continuing to support their families during this incredibly difficult time, and our thoughts and sympathies are with all those who loved and knew them.”

“In respecting the privacy of the families, no further details will be released.”

Over a dozen competitors have died while participating in the half-marathon over its 45-year history. Two years ago, 29-year-old Sam Wealleans died after collapsing during the race.

Prime Minister Andy Burnham took part in this year’s Great North Run, becoming the first serving leader of the UK to complete the race. He finished in one hour and 57 minutes.

The elite men’s race was won by American athlete Zouhair Talbi, while the women’s race was claimed by Kenyan runner Brigid Kosgei.
