Two Earthquakes in Peru’s Junin Region Leave Six Dead, Dozens Injured

At least six people died and 21 others were injured after two earthquakes shook a mountainous area in Peru’s Junin region, according to the National Civil Defence Institute on Sunday.

The twin quakes, registering magnitudes 5.1 and 3.7, struck Chupaca province approximately 300 kilometers east of Lima on Saturday night, as reported by Peru’s National Seismological Centre via social media.

Preliminary data indicates the first earthquake occurred at a depth of 24 kilometers, while the second was measured at 18 kilometers depth.

The European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre previously recorded the initial tremor at a slightly higher magnitude of 5.6.

Luis Vasquez, head of Peru’s National Civil Defence Institute, stated that initial assessments show around 48 homes were destroyed and 18 others damaged, displacing roughly 300 individuals who are now receiving temporary shelter in tents.

Many residences in the affected Chupaca communities consist of basic adobe brick structures.
