Roughly 50,000 U.S. troops are stationed in Japan, with most based on Okinawa. The island remained under U.S. control from the end of World War II until 1972.
Currently, nearly 80,000 Americans live on Okinawa, including about 30,000 active-duty service members from all four military branches, with the Marine Corps accounting for the largest presence there.
