WASHINGTON, Sept 1 (Reuters) – The U.S. military announced late Tuesday that it had concluded its latest series of airstrikes on Iran, targeting Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) facilities as tensions escalated following a weekend exchange of hostilities.
U.S. forces reportedly struck IRGC infrastructure, including air defense installations, radar systems, maritime assets, mine-laying capabilities, and communication networks, according to a statement from U.S. Central Command shared on X.
An Axios report, citing U.S. officials, indicated the strikes included attacks on two Iranian government-owned tankers.
Iran retaliated against U.S. operations on Tuesday, marking the most significant escalation in recent weeks in a conflict that has amplified global energy market volatility.
The strikes followed a weekend exchange of fire, the first such incident since late July, and Monday’s attacks on two tankers exiting the Strait of Hormuz, the critical global oil shipping channel that Iran has restricted. Tehran responded with strikes on U.S. installations in Jordan, Bahrain, and Iraq.
The Iranian Red Crescent reported five fatalities and dozens of injuries at a wedding near Sirik, a coastal area along the Strait of Hormuz. The Mehr news agency noted a 4-year-old child among the deceased, while IRNA, citing a provincial official, reported 68 wounded.
The U.S. and Israel conducted joint operations against Iran on February 28, after which Iran launched countermeasures against Israeli and Gulf nation targets hosting U.S. military bases. These exchanges have resulted in thousands of casualties and massive displacement.
U.S. Energy Secretary Chris Wright stated that 17 million barrels of crude oil transited the Strait of Hormuz on Monday, representing the highest volume since the conflict disrupted flows.
President Donald Trump stated on Tuesday that he was not seeking to compel Iran to negotiate, writing on social media, “When will the Iranian people rise up and fight?”
