An Elf sequel has never been necessary. The 2003 original, starring Will Ferrell as a human raised among elves who travels to New York to find his biological father, played by James Caan, has secured its status as a perennial holiday classic. Yet, as actor and comedian Andy Richter recently disclosed, a follow-up was once seriously contemplated—with a screenplay written by U2 guitarist The Edge.
Speaking on The Daily Beast’s Obsessed podcast, Richter—who appeared in the original film and co-authored the new book Elf Unwrapped: Behind The Scenes Of A Modern Christmas Classic—told host Matt Wilstein that Canadian producer Shauna Robertson had been approached regarding the project. According to Richter, the musician was eager to discuss the fully written script, though he did not reveal its plot details. The project ultimately stalled for unspecified reasons, leaving a curious footnote in the film’s history.
