Uber has announced the launch of autonomous vehicle rides in London through a partnership with British autonomous vehicle company Wayve.
Customers requesting UberX, Uber Comfort, or Uber Electric rides may be matched with a Ford Mustang Mach-E equipped with Wayve’s self-driving technology. Riders will receive a notification prior to the autonomous vehicle’s arrival, allowing them to opt for a traditional vehicle if preferred.
The service received regulatory approval last month, with Uber securing a license to operate autonomous vehicles in London. The license requires a human supervisor to remain present in the front seat at all times, and broader deployment without direct human oversight may take some time.
Uber has stated that pricing for autonomous rides will match traditional rates. While tipping will not be automatically prompted during trips, passengers retain the ability to tip via the Trip History section following their ride.
Uber has previously deployed autonomous vehicle fleets in several U.S. cities, including Dallas, Las Vegas, Atlanta, and Austin, with further expansion planned for Los Angeles and the Bay Area. The partnership with Wayve is set to continue, with future plans to introduce Nissan-branded autonomous vehicles to Tokyo.
