Britain’s sanctions on illegal Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank will also extend to those in East Jerusalem and the Golan Heights, according to a report on Friday, Anadolu reports.
The new measures will also target Israeli settlements in the Golan Heights, Syria, and East Jerusalem, government sources told the UK‑based news outlet Middle East Eye.
UN Security Council Resolution 497 declares the Israeli Golan Heights Law—legislation that effectively annexed the Golan Heights—to be “null and void and without international legal effect,” and calls on Israel to repeal it. The UN also acknowledges East Jerusalem as occupied territory.
Earlier this week, UK Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband unveiled a series of measures, including a ban on imports from illegal settlements, sanctions on companies and individuals that support settlement expansion, and additional sanctions on extremist Israeli groups accused of inciting violence against Palestinians.
British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has defended the sanctions on illegal settlements in the occupied West Bank, stating that the risk of the two‑state solution’s collapse “should concern us all.”
