The rapid expansion of artificial intelligence has triggered an investment surge in data‑center infrastructure. As tech giants race to add capacity, they confront a critical bottleneck: securing reliable, affordable power. Growing strain on the electric grid and rising energy costs are prompting companies to explore innovative clean‑energy solutions to sustain uninterrupted operations.

Fervo and Google have been working together for a few years on geothermal power

Google and Fervo’s collaboration dates back to 2021, when the two companies launched Project Red—a commercial proof‑of‑concept pilot that demonstrated the viability of Fervo’s Enhanced Geothermal Systems (EGS) technology. In June 2024, a 115‑MW power purchase agreement (PPA) with Google and NV Energy further advanced the partnership, and Fervo has since committed to develop up to 3 GW of geothermal capacity. On Sept. 1, Fervo signed a landmark 396‑MW PPA with Google, the largest enhanced geothermal PPA to date. The deal calls for electricity from Fervo’s Cape Station development in Utah, with commercial delivery targeted for 2028. Google also secured options to increase its offtake by an additional 600 MW, potentially reaching a total of roughly 1 GW by mid‑2030.

The agreement validates Fervo’s EGS technology and showcases its ability to provide the continuous, baseload power required by AI data centers. It expands Fervo’s contracted portfolio to about 1.1 GW, offering visibility into future revenue streams.

How Fervo’s EGS technology works

Enhanced geothermal systems differ from conventional geothermal by creating a controllable heat source. Traditional geothermal relies on naturally occurring reservoirs, which are scarce and typically limited to volcanic or tectonically active zones. Fervo’s EGS employs horizontal drilling to access hot rock formations and generate electricity anywhere drillable depths are reached, unlocking a virtually inexhaustible supply of clean energy.

What’s next for Fervo?

Fervo outlines a two‑phase development plan. Phase I aims to bring roughly 100 MW online, with commercial operations expected late in 2026 or early in 2027. Phase II will add another 400 MW through eight self‑contained 50 MW GeoBlock modules. By standardizing the 50 MW design, the company can mass‑produce components, lower costs, and complete Phase II within about two years, achieving commercial operation by 2028. Together, the phases will provide the 500 MW of offtake under the current PPA, positioning Google to meet a significant portion of its AI‑driven electricity demand with clean, dispatchable power.
