In response to inquiries about Iran’s potential to target the UK, Wes Streeting emphasized dismissing “sabre-rattling” rhetoric and stated that the nation should remain undaunted by recent statements from the Iranian regime.
Streeting reiterated the UK’s position regarding US military operations in Iran, clarifying that Britain has not participated in and will not engage in offensive actions alongside American forces.
He highlighted alignment with the US on ensuring maritime security and safeguarding commercial shipping routes through the Strait of Hormuz, describing this as a shared priority.
Streeting is scheduled to meet with US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth in the following week to discuss collaborative strategies, noting prior discussions with Hegseth had already taken place.
The UK is prepared to spearhead a naval operation to clear mines from the Strait of Hormuz, contingent upon favorable conditions, as securing these waterways remains critical to mitigating the crisis’s impact on energy markets and living costs.
Regarding a recent Russian naval exercise in the English Channel, Streeting characterized the event as “performative” while condemning its “unsafe and unprofessional conduct” as a broader security concern.
He labeled the incident “irresponsible” and stressed that Russia’s activities pose a threat to UK security, underscoring the extensive efforts undertaken daily to counter such aggression, which often go unnoticed by the public.
