As a significant heatwave grips the UK, families—particularly those with newborns—are increasingly turning to air-conditioned hotel rooms to find relief, according to recent industry data.
Data from Booking.com reveals that searches utilizing the “air-conditioning” filter have tripled across Great Britain since June 1st, aligning with the onset of the current weather patterns in Northern Europe. This trend is reflected in financial metrics as well; payment processor Adyen reported that the UK hotel industry saw a 34% revenue increase between June 22 and June 25 compared to the previous year.
The UK has recently faced some of its most intense temperatures, with parts of England and Wales seeing highs in the mid-to-high 30s. The Met Office issued several extreme heat warnings, and a provisional June temperature record of 36.9C was recorded in Wattisham, Suffolk.
Heartwood Inns, a prominent operator of pubs and guest rooms, reported occupancy rates reaching 86% this week. The company noted a significant shift in consumer inquiries, with approximately one-third of potential guests specifically asking about air-conditioning facilities before finalizing bookings. Notably, the group has seen a rise in requests from parents seeking cooled environments to ensure the comfort and safety of their infants.
Dean Culpan, General Manager at London’s Templeton Garden hotel, noted that the property is currently operating at full capacity. “With the heatwave in full swing, guests are increasingly seeking cool, comfortable spaces to work remotely and escape the urban heat,” Culpan stated, adding that shaded terrace areas have also become highly popular.
Gemma Jones, Hotel Operations Manager at The Feathers in Woodstock, observed a similar trend of spontaneous travel. “We have seen occupancy rise from 74% to 81% this week,” Jones said. “Many guests are making last-minute decisions to escape the heat at home, often opting for short stays or extending their visits to ensure they remain in a climate-controlled environment.”
Jones emphasized that air-conditioned accommodations have become a primary selling point, with many guests choosing hotels specifically to guarantee a restful night’s sleep away from the rising temperatures.
