LONDON — Police evacuated homes near an English air base used by U.S. forces and detained several men on suspicion of explosives-related offenses.
Gloucestershire Police said on Sunday that residents of several properties in Whelford, western England, were relocated to a nearby leisure centre, and that the situation remains contained.
The location is near RAF Fairford, a base that U.S. forces have used for limited strikes during the Iran conflict. Following the onset of the U.S.-Israel tensions with Iran on February 28, the UK government authorised the U.S. military to operate from Fairford to target Iranian missile sites.
Police say several men have been detained on suspicion of violations under the Explosives Act, and army bomb-disposal teams are inspecting several vehicles.
“A cordon remains in place, but we want to reassure the public that we consider the incident contained,” the force said.
