Two freight trains collided on Friday in Bedford, United Kingdom, resulting in a deadly incident declared a major emergency by emergency responders.
According to East Midlands Railway (EMR), its 16:40 Corby to London St Pancras service collided with the 15:50 Nottingham to London St Pancras service at Bedford South station.
“Tragically, this incident resulted in thefatality of an EMR driver and a number of injuries to passengers on board,” the company stated in its official release.
Further reports indicate that at least 33 individuals sustained serious injuries following the crash.
A passenger interviewed by the BBC described the moment as feeling “like being in a bomb explosion”.
“Upon waking, I observed passengers with bloodied faces, fractured limbs, and thick smoke permeating the cars,” he stated.
Over 20 ambulances, six air ambulances, and specialized hazardous area response teams were deployed to the scene across southeast England.
In a social media post, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer described the events as “highly concerning” and extended gratitude toward emergency responders for their “prompt action”.
“My deepest condolences go to the family of the deceased and all those injured in this devastating incident,” he emphasized in his statement.
Will Rogers, EMR’s managing director, announced the organization’s presence at the scene alongside Network Rail and emergency services to aid affected individuals and coordinate ongoing response efforts.
“After ensuring all affected parties receive necessary care, our organization will thoroughly investigate the incident alongside the Rail Accident Investigation Branch,” Rogers confirmed.
