UK Village Feels Heightened Fear Over Potential Terror Threat Near Major Air Base
CIRENCESTER, United Kingdom: Residents in a bucolic corner of southwestern England described themselves as “spooked” after an U.S. military air base linked to its campaign against Iran prompted bomb specialists onto the scene on Sunday.
Stephanie’s family, part of a total of 85 households from the village of Whelford—approximately a mile (1.6 kilometers) from RAF Fairford—were ordered to evacuate during the early hours of Sunday after being alerted to “suspicious vehicles.”
Police have not confirmed the nature or origin of the threat near the base, though they arrested five men suspected of preparing a terrorist act. Aerial broadcasts captured a bomb‑disposal robot moving among the vans.
A resident informed UK media that she had called emergency services after witnessing three vans blocking a road near the village and a group of men wearing hoods and balaclavas.
All villagers were moved to a leisure centre in nearby Cirencester, where Stephanie intended to spend the night with her puppy and two cats while a police cordon remained in place.
“I’m absolutely exhausted,” Stephanie, who declined to disclose her surname, told AFP, adding that the danger of the situation “didn’t quite hit me till now.”
“It’s quite a lovely, small village. It’s a real shame,” said Stephanie.
“You don’t expect anything to happen around here. It’s just a lovely quaint area of the Cotswolds,” said 20‑year‑old university student George Currie, who lives in the market town of Cirencester—a place with a medieval church and tidy rows of limestone buildings.
“I’m sure all the residents of Fairford are quite spooked and jumped about it,” said Currie.
“With how important Fairford has been to the air base, I’d be quite scared to live there at the moment.”
In March, Britain granted the United States permission to use Fairford airbase for “specific defensive operations into Iran” aimed at destroying Iranian missiles.
Since then, U.S. bombers and additional aircraft have been observed taking off and landing from the airfield.
Fairford had previously hosted American forces during the Gulf War and the 2003 Iraq war.
‘REALITY CHECK’
A dog‑walker in Cirencester, who protected his identity, mentioned that his wife had been “worried about threats to Fairford,” stating the news felt like nightmares realized.
Local councilor Tristan Wilkinson noted that the community and authorities have become more vigilant around the base recently, citing the operation codenamed “Epic Fury.”
The Interior Ministry had earlier accused Iran and Russia of deploying proxies to conduct criminal activities under British territory.
“I mean, with everything that’s been happening around the airbase, something such as that seems inevitable,” said 21‑year‑old Victor Compton.“The effects of war reach into the safest parts of the world,” curled the university student, describing it as a stark reminder of global conflict.
