While Ukraine is still recovering from the massive missile and drone strike that killed at least 22 people, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy warned that Moscow is already preparing another large‑scale assault. He made the announcement during his regular nightly address on Tuesday evening.
“We have intelligence indicating that a substantial attack could occur again tonight,” Zelenskyy said. He urged citizens to heed air‑raid alerts and seek shelter immediately.
Zelenskyy also called on Western allies to increase their support for Ukraine, advocating for stronger sanctions against Russia. He emphasized that Russian missiles and drones rely heavily on components sourced from abroad, citing data such as: “Five Kalibr missiles require 145 components, 33 Iskander missiles need 1,122, while 650 attack drones use over 17,000 components. Without these parts, production is impossible.”
He noted that Russia continues to circumvent sanctions in large‑scale programs, which he described as “absolutely real complicity in killings.”
Russia Exploits Lack of Patriot Systems
During the night of 2 June, Russian forces launched more than 70 missiles and 650 drones at Ukraine, followed by approximately 100 additional drones in the daylight hours. Although Ukraine’s air defence intercepted most of the drones, ballistic missiles posed the greatest threat.
“Sadly, our current supply levels for air defence do not allow us to intercept a significant proportion of missiles,” Zelenskyy admitted. The Patriot system remains the sole surface‑to‑air platform capable of countering Moscow’s ballistic missile threat.
Manufactured by Raytheon and Lockheed Martin in the United States, Patriot missiles have been widely used by U.S. allies, including Ukraine. The U.S.–Israel conflict over Iran has already depleted nearly a third of Patriot interceptor stockpiles in the Gulf, with estimates that Gulf states have fired more than 1,100 interceptors. Lockheed Martin produces roughly 600 interceptors annually, and Zelenskyy has stated that monthly production reached only 60–65 missiles at best.
In the past ten days, Russia has launched over 60 ballistic missiles at Ukraine—an equivalent to an entire month’s production for U.S. manufacturers.
