WFP aid convoy attacked in Sudan’s South Kordofan, driver killed amid rising violence

Airstrike on a UN convoy in Sudan’s South Kordofan left one driver dead, the World Food Programme reported.
The WFP said in a Sunday statement that the trucks, clearly marked as humanitarian aid vehicles, were hit while transporting food. The organization did not name the attackers.
The strike occurred on Saturday as the convoy moved between two towns held by the Sudanese Armed Forces in South Kordofan.
Hostilities in the Kordofan area have escalated since late 2025, turning the region into a frontline between the SAF and the Rapid Support Forces, which have been battling for control of Sudan in a civil war now exceeding three years.
Officials are still assessing the damage and gathering further details about the attack on the WFP trucks, and the agency has called for an investigation.
“These events highlight the deteriorating security situation in Sudan and the dangers faced by aid workers delivering essential assistance,” the statement noted.
Since fighting broke out in April 2023, one in five attacks across Sudan has taken place in Kordofan. The army has gained ground in the north, while the RSF controls much of the west, leaving South Kordofan contested.
Both sides have increasingly relied on drones, leading to more frequent and lethal strikes on towns in North Kordofan and damaging civilian infrastructure throughout the region.
The war has displaced roughly 14 million people, contributing to one of the severest food crises in recent memory and causing tens of thousands of deaths.
According to an Integrated Food Security Phase Classification assessment, nearly 19.5 million people—about 41 % of Sudan’s population—experienced acute food insecurity between February and May. Over five million endured extreme, life‑threatening hunger, and 135,000 faced the threat of famine.
