United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has expressed deep alarm over the intensifying military activity and threats targeting commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz, according to a statement released Wednesday by his spokesperson, Stéphane Dujarric.
Dujarric conveyed the Secretary-General’s grave concern regarding recent attacks on merchant vessels and warnings of further action against maritime and energy infrastructure in the strait, a critical global chokepoint. He reiterated Guterres’s insistence that navigational rights and freedom of passage must be fully restored and upheld in accordance with international law.
The UN chief has called on all parties to exercise maximum restraint and refrain from hostile actions or rhetoric. The organization cautioned that any further escalation could carry severe consequences for civilian populations, global economic stability, and international peace and security.
