Conor Oberst—the celebrated singer-songwriter, label founder and local bar owner—is expanding his creative résumé as a filmmaker. His directorial debut, the short film Invention 13, is scheduled to premiere on September 26 at Beyond Fest in Los Angeles.

According to a press release, the film follows a frustrated pianist struggling to master Bach’s famously intricate Invention. Co-directed with fellow musician Shawn Foree, it stars actors Emory Cohen and Olivia Howard alongside professional skateboarder Nelly Morville. Oberst’s former Better Oblivion Community Center bandmate, Phoebe Bridgers, contributes the voiceover, while Bright Eyes member Nathaniel Walcott composed the score.
