Underdog Alert: Why Alatengheili Represents Strong Value at +300

Parlaying heavy favorites is the standard approach to UFC betting, but underdogs succeed roughly 35% of the time in the world’s largest MMA promotion. Bettors should not shy away from plus-money opportunities.

A predictive model developed using in-fight statistics and fighter attributes has simulated UFC outcomes over the years. The findings consistently indicate that moneyline favorites are frequently overvalued.

How is this possible? The sheer volume of variables in a mixed martial arts fight makes it incredibly difficult to distinguish between a -150 and -350 favorite in real time. While a great bet can occasionally lose, a terrible one sometimes wins purely due to luck.

With at least seven favorites priced at -200, the card at the Apex is heavily skewed toward the betting favorite. However, it is inevitable that one of these heavy favorites will falter. This dynamic perfectly sets up the bantamweight prelim between John Castaneda and Alatengheili.

The market currently suggests a 75% likelihood that this bout goes the distance, a figure my model closely tracks at 59.3%. After all, six of Castaneda’s nine UFC fights have gone the full distance, and Alatengheili has endured all 15 minutes in eight of his nine bouts. The only exception to his durability was a first-round (T)KO victory.

Has “The Mongolian Knight” ever been given the nod in a decision? He is 4-3 in UFC decisions, while Castaneda is 2-3. Both fighters also possess a draw on their records.

Speaking of draws, “Sexi Mexi” recently fought to a draw with Mark Vologdin, who holds a -2.73 striking success rate (SSR). Consequently, Alatengheili’s -2.30 SSR—achieved against tougher competition such as Da’Mon Blackshear, Casey Kenney, and Chris Gutierrez—appears less intimidating than it might initially seem.

Castaneda has historically struggled with weight management and endurance, rendering him an unreliable favorite. These issues seemingly persist, as the American had to shave his head to make the bantamweight limit.

Alatengheili can impose a high-paced grappling style to drain his opponent’s stamina. He attempts 4.07 takedowns per 15 minutes, converting a higher percentage of them (43%) than Castaneda (37%). Both fighters, however, share an identical 75% takedown defense rate.

Utilizing a five-inch reach advantage, I anticipate Castaneda will control the distance early, yet I lack confidence in his efficiency or power to create a stoppage, given his mere 0.62% knockdown rate.

I concur with my model’s assessment. While I assign Castaneda a 30.0% chance of finishing the fight compared to Alatengheili’s 10.7%, a full-distance bout favors the Mongolian. I project Alatengheili at a 30.1% chance of winning by decision, versus 29.2% for Castaneda. This aligns with the likelihood of a Round 3 dynamic that heavily favors the underdog’s cardio if the fight goes that far.
