The US military has struck three Iran-linked oil tankers in response to ballistic missiles fired toward two American warships in the region.
US Central Command (Centcom) reported on Saturday that it had “permanently disabled” one tanker near Kharg Island, another near the Strait of Hormuz, and “completely destroyed” a third vessel in the Gulf of Oman.
Centcom stated it “successfully evaded” multiple attacks launched by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) targeting a US aircraft carrier and a guided-missile destroyer. No American service members were injured, according to an official statement.
Iranian state media reported earlier that one of its oil tankers had been hit by US missiles off the coast of Kharg Island.
“Let the message to the IRGC be clear: If you shoot at two of our ships, we will impose an even higher economic cost — taking out three of yours,” said Admiral Brad Cooper, Centcom’s commander.
“We will not hesitate to defend American forces, and if necessary, destroy Iran’s limited and exposed oil fleet.”
The strikes come nearly a week after renewed hostilities between the US and Iran, following a month of relative calm between the two sides.
