US Envoys Witkoff and Kushner Meet Mediators as Iran Sets Conditions for Hormuz Reopening

President Donald Trump announced on Tuesday that his special envoys, Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, held talks with mediators to explore a potential agreement to resolve the Iran standoff.

Speaking to reporters at the United Nations, Trump described the three‑hour meeting with Iranian officials held earlier that day as ‘very good’.

He added that Washington and Tehran appear to be edging toward a settlement, noting that a senior Iranian official indicated Tehran could reopen the Strait of Hormuz within days should the United States reduce its military pressure and lift the blockade on Iranian ports.

He said, “We are completely isolating Iran financially and applying pressure in the hope that they will act quickly before it’s too late.” He continued, “There will come a point when it is too late, and we will no longer have the option of letting them survive as a nation.”

Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi met with US Special Envoy Steve Witkoff on Tuesday on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly, where Tehran conveyed its conditions for reopening the Strait of Hormuz to Washington, according to Iranian state media.

The conditions cited by Iranian state media include an immediate lift of the naval blockade, the immediate release of frozen Iranian assets, and an end to hostilities on all ‘resistance’ fronts.

Trump’s comments followed just hours after he reiterated at the UN General Assembly a threat to annihilate Iran should it fail to reach an agreement.

Speaking after a meeting with British Prime Minister Andy Burnham at the United Nations in New York, Trump said: “They want to talk to us; they have been engaging with us, including today, and the relationship is developing.”

“But we cannot allow them to acquire a nuclear weapon—and they understand that.”
