US missions in Iraq issued a warning to American citizens on Friday, urging them to stay vigilant as regional tensions rise, noting that Iran and affiliated groups may target US interests and facilities globally.
The embassy and consulate stated that the security environment is complex and susceptible to sudden escalation.
The missions urged U.S. citizens in Iraq to stay prepared, keep track of local media, and adhere to directives from Iraqi authorities, warning that travel disruptions and airspace closures could occur suddenly.
U.S. travelers abroad were advised to reconsider trips to or through the Middle East, and those already in the region should anticipate possible flight cancellations, repeated airspace shutdowns, and related disruptions.
The alert noted that U.S. diplomatic facilities, even those beyond the Middle East, have been targeted, and that Iran and its supporters may strike additional U.S. interests abroad or locations tied to American citizens worldwide.
The U.S. mission in Iraq remains operational, continuing services under an ordered departure policy, and appointments for American citizens are still available at the Baghdad embassy.
The missions advised Americans to avoid demonstrations, large gatherings, and areas with heightened security, and to seek shelter and stay clear of falling debris if an attack occurs.
The warning followed the interception of five suicide drones over Erbil on Friday by air defense systems, which caused a series of explosions throughout the northern Iraqi city.
Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps later claimed responsibility for striking U.S. military assets in Erbil, such as a Patriot air defense system, a surveillance balloon, and a residence housing American personnel, though these claims could not be independently verified.
Iran has repeatedly launched missile and drone attacks against targets in Erbil and Sulaymaniyah, both in northern Iraq, since the conflict involving Iran, Israel, and the United States began, prompting the Kurdish Regional Government to condemn the attacks and call on Tehran to cease them.
