US military forces conducted fresh strikes against Iranian military infrastructure on Wednesday, marking the second time in three days that American troops have engaged Iranian targets in the region.
According to a US official, American forces intercepted and destroyed four one-way attack drones launched by Iran over the Strait of Hormuz. The official stated that the drones posed a direct threat to US military personnel operating in the area, as well as to limited commercial maritime traffic attempting to transit through the strategically vital waterway.
In a related action, US warplanes struck a drone ground-control station in Bandar Abbas before it could launch a fifth drone, the official said. The strikes were described as defensive measures aimed at protecting US forces.
This latest exchange follows incidents from Monday, when the US carried out strikes against Iranian missile launch sites and destroyed boats attempting to deploy mines in the Strait of Hormuz. US Central Command spokesman Capt. Tim Hawkins characterized those actions as “self-defense strikes” designed to protect troops from Iranian threats.
The broader context includes Iranian drone launches near US military assets in the Gulf of Oman and Arabian Sea, along with increased activity at Iranian surface-to-air missile sites. US military analysts also detected concerning movements among Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps speedboats, which were subsequently targeted and engaged by US forces.
US officials indicated that Iran’s military activities may reflect an attempt to assess the operational parameters under a potential ceasefire framework being discussed, with President Trump previously suggesting such an agreement could reopen the Strait of Hormuz to commercial traffic.
