The Utica Comets have officially hired Mike Zalewski as an assistant coach.
A New Hartford, N.Y. native, Zalewski has deep roots with the organization, having played 167 regular-season games for the Comets between 2014 and 2017. During his tenure, he tallied 24 goals and 39 assists, and contributed one goal and three assists across 27 postseason games. He was also a key member of the 2015 Comets squad that advanced to the Calder Cup Finals.
The 34-year-old Zalewski previously appeared in six NHL games for the Vancouver Canucks, recording two assists. Following his time in North America, he concluded his professional playing career in Europe, where he spent six seasons competing in Germany and Austria.
Zalewski will serve as an assistant coach under head coach Ryan Parent, joining Matt Carkner on the coaching staff.
