The signing of Uzbekistan defender Abdukodir Khusanov by Manchester City in January 2025 for £34m has propelled him to stardom in his home country. Once a relatively unknown 20-year-old, Khusanov’s prominence in the City squad and the Premier League has made him the face of Uzbekistani football. His journey to the top is largely attributed to Server Djeparov, the only Uzbekistan national to win the Asian footballer of the year award twice, who paved the way for Khusanov’s rise.
Djeparov, renowned for his signature mullet, had trials at Chelsea and was part of Uzbekistan’s team that narrowly missed the World Cup three times. However, a new icon has emerged in Khusanov, with comparisons drawn between his influence on Uzbek football and David Beckham’s impact on England in the early 2000s. As noted by Bowers, “Khusanov’s ascent from Minsk to Manchester has been remarkable, and his effect on Uzbek football, considering his age and experience, is hard to gauge.”
Although Uzbekistan has produced players for distinguished European clubs like Roma and Dynamo Kyiv, Khusanov’s transfer at a time of unparalleled global engagement with English football has mirrored Beckham’s rise, inspiring a generation of young players and establishing himself as the national team’s emblem. The extent of his influence on youth football remains to be seen, but his tenure at a prominent club like City will undoubtedly amplify it.
Reflecting on this phenomenon, Bowers added, “We’ve already observed players attracting trials or joining top-tier European clubs or being anticipated to do so shortly in leagues such as Belgium and Portugal, indicating the ripple effect is already manifesting.”
Uzbekistan’s forward, Jaloliddin Masharipov, commented on Khusanov’s popularity at home: “He’s the first Premier League player in Uzbekistan. All fans adore him now, but fans hold all national team players in high regard. Whenever you venture out, whether to a restaurant or elsewhere, people seek a photo. You don’t have to pay for the respect you receive.”
