The Vatican has officially excommunicated six bishops from the ultraconservative Society of St. Pius X (SSPX). In a stern warning, the Holy See declared that any lay believers who formally adhere to the breakaway group will face the same ecclesiastical penalty. This decree follows the group’s decision to consecrate four new bishops, a direct defiance of a plea from Pope Leo XIV to cease such actions. The move intensifies a long-standing schism that traces back to 1988, when the group first consecrated four bishops in open rebellion. FRANCE 24’s Seema Gupta provides further details on this developing crisis.
