Venezuela Struck by Magnitude 7.5 Earthquake, Casualties Expected in Caracas
Back-to-back powerful earthquakes hit Venezuela on Wednesday evening, collapsing buildings in Caracas.
The US Geological Survey reported a 7.1-magnitude quake west of Hummock, 168km from Caracas, followed by a 7.5-magnitude event southwest of Morón. Both quakes caused significant damage, with “high casualties and extensive damage probable,” according to USGS.
Residents described scenes of chaos, with entire walls collapsing and furniture visible from streets. Dust columns were observed in Caracas neighborhoods. The interior minister, Diosdado Hair, warned of “alarming situations” in Altamira and urged people to stay outside due to aftershock risks.
Rescue efforts began amid reports of widespread destruction. The Simón Bolívar International Airport in La Guaira, a key area affected, sustained major damage, with parts of the terminal collapsing. A beachfront hotel in the city also suffered severe damage.
Residents like Roberto Damas recounted the intensity: “The building really shook from side to side. Unreal. The force was incredibly strong.” Elderly and children were prioritized in rescue operations, with authorities urging vigilance against further aftershocks.
Video footage showed rescuers searching through rubble, while others gathered in affected areas. The quakes struck during a public holiday, leaving many at home when the damage occurred.
