Photographs of Max Verstappen and Mercedes Formula 1 team principal Toto Wolff holidaying together during the first week of the summer break have ignited renewed speculation across the paddock regarding the four-time world champion’s future.
Social media has been inundated with images of Verstappen, his partner Kelly Piquet, Wolff, and his wife, F1 Academy managing director Susie Wolff, enjoying a shared vacation. The pictures capture the group conversing on a yacht deck and zipping around on jet skis and hoverboards.
Although Verstappen and Wolff have previously been photographed together on holiday, this latest outing has only served to stoke rumours connecting the Dutchman to the Mercedes-AMG Petronas team based in Brackley.
“It’s quite odd, isn’t it? The boss of a top team goes on holiday with a driver from a rival team. After years of rumours of him signing, one might wonder if Toto is simply such a fun companion that Max can’t wait to spend time with him,” one fan commented on Reddit.
It should be noted that a strong longstanding friendship exists between Wolff and Verstappen’s family. Wolff has previously explained that his mutual respect with Verstappen’s father, Jos, endured after a meeting in a Vienna living room, where they discussed the driver’s future.
Wolff stated in 2024, “I’ve known Jos for my entire life, and perhaps our similarity explains our rapport. When Max entered the single-seater scene, our relationship blossomed into a strong one.” He added, “Our living room meeting in Vienna, prior to Verstappen joining Red Bull’s junior team, was likely the first significant Formula 1 discussion they ever had, and we consistently shared an understanding of how things would unfold for both us and them. That respect has remained unchanged.”
Verstappen also took part in the 2026 Nürburgring 24 Hours, driving a Mercedes-AMG GT3 Evo entered by Winward Racing.

In spite of the speculation and his earlier expressed regrets over not having signed Verstappen before he joined Red Bull’s junior programme in 2014, Wolff has recently reaffirmed his commitment to retaining the current driver pairing of George Russell and Kimi Antonelli for the 2027 season.
Wolff stated in an interview with Sky Sports F1, “We see no reason to disrupt the status quo. George has also been made aware, and I believe this pairing suits us perfectly. I am very content with both drivers.”
Verstappen remains contracted to Red Bull until the end of 2028, though an exit clause in that agreement could facilitate a departure earlier should he choose to invoke it. It is understood that the 28-year-old Dutchman can trigger the clause if he is not ranked at least second in the drivers’ championship standings by the summer break.
He currently sits in sixth place with 109 points, trailing championship leader Antonelli by 110 points.
Beyond the Mercedes speculation, Verstappen has also been touted as a potential McLaren recruit. Despite the persistent rumours, the Red Bull driver has maintained a guarded stance on his future. “I decline to offer yes or no answers regarding my plans,” he stated ahead of the Belgian Grand Prix.
He added, “I have communicated on numerous occasions that should any developments arise, I will be the one to share them.”
