Vincent Young Directs Debut Film ‘Small Talk,’ A 1970s L.A. Music Drama Featuring Keegan Allen, Conor Husting, and More

Vincent Young has completed principal photography on Small Talk, his directorial debut, a period music drama set in late 1970s Los Angeles. The ensemble cast includes Keegan Allen (Pretty Little Liars), Conor Husting (The Expanding Universe of Ashley Garcia), Rio Mangini (Wolf Pack), Sophia Del Rio (72 Hours), and Austin North (Outer Banks).

Set against the vibrant yet gritty backdrop of the late ’70s Los Angeles rock scene, Small Talk follows a young band navigating the precipice of success. As ambition, romance, and addiction loom over their journey, the film explores how these forces test the friendships and loyalties that originally forged their sound.

Young co-wrote the screenplay with RJ Zabasky, based on a story co-conceived with Douglas Young. Douglas Young also serves as an executive producer, alongside Kristifor Cvijetic and Zabasky. Additional producers include Brian Yuran, Evan Sorlien, and Chris Kim.

The supporting cast features Sophie Swiszcz, Shaun Holmes, Ruben Vernier, Doug Locke, Jamison Jones, Ross Gallo, Kavan Reece, Maury Morgan, Liam Martinez, and Michael Paré. Dean Fronk and Donald Pemrick overseen casting.

“At its core, Small Talk is about what we leave behind in others,” Young explained to Deadline. “The title emerged from the idea that life’s ‘noise’—the things we say, chase, or project—pales beside the actions we take for those we love. I’m drawn to characters still discovering this truth, and I wanted a world so vivid it felt like stepping into 1970s Los Angeles rather than recreating it from afar.”
