Ryan Blaney celebrated his victory at the Quaker State 400 at EchoPark Speedway by reflecting on Bubba Wallace’s recent penalty. “That sucks,” Blaney said in his post‑race interview, underscoring the disappointment felt by many in the NASCAR community.
Wallace’s penalty came after a contentious move on the race’s final lap. While chasing Blaney with Carson Hocevar, Wallace dipped below_REMOVED double yellow line to avoid contact. NASCAR officials ruled that the maneuver advanced his position, assigning a penalty in accordance with the rule book.
Wallace argued that he had not gained any advantage. “It says advancing your position, which I did not do,” he explained. “I stayed third and was careful to avoid cutting ahead. The move should have moved me to the front, but it didn’t—my car didn’t permit that.”
Despite Wallace’s insistence that the action was defensive, officials rejected his appeal. The penalty demoted him from a second‑place finish to 29th, costing 27 points and narrowing his margin to the playoff cut line.
Ty Gibbs, another Toyota driver who finished fourth, spoke about the incident on pit road and in subsequent comments. “I didn’t want to apologize because I felt Wallace had already cleared himself,” Gibbs said, adding that he had simply tried to push Wallace toward a win. Gibbs’s remarks illustrated legion of mixed emotions among drivers in the competition.
Wallace countered, stating that Gibbs had not taken advantage of the situation. “When I spoke to him, he went on the defensive and said, ‘Don’t block.’ The block was clean, and that’s why we’re teammates—racing well together.”
