Retail giants Walmart and Sam’s Club announced sweeping summer discounts on thousands of everyday essentials and seasonal items on Monday, a move that quickly drew political attention following comments from former President Donald Trump attributing the initiative to his administration’s request.

In a news release, Walmart and Sam’s Club stated they are implementing nationwide price reductions to help families manage costs during summer activities such as backyard gatherings, vacations, and regular grocery shopping.

The savings encompass multiple categories including groceries, household essentials, outdoor living, toys, and apparel. Specific examples of price cuts include fresh sweet corn reduced to $0.25 from $0.68, fresh red cherries lowered to $5.63 from $11.18, and 1 lb. ground beef priced at $5.94 instead of $6.74.

Soda prices also saw notable reductions, with 24-packs of Coca-Cola products dropping to $9.97 from $14.97 and 24-packs of Pepsi products decreasing to $9.97 from $13.97.

“Customers count on Walmart to deliver the value they need every day, and summer is no exception,” said Julie Barber, executive vice president and chief merchant for Walmart U.S., in a statement. Barber added that Walmart is aggressively reducing costs on frequently purchased items, including groceries, fresh produce, grills, pools, and summer fashion.

Simultaneously, Sam’s Club is reducing prices on over 250 items, focusing on road trip snacks, grilling supplies, and summer entertaining needs. Discounted items include Member’s Mark bone-in chicken wings at $2.00/lb. (down from $2.88/lb.) and Member’s Mark beef hot dogs at $10.86 (reduced from $12.96).

In a post on Truth Social, former President Donald Trump praised Walmart as a “truly patriotic company” and claimed the discounts were initiated “at my Administration’s request to celebrate our great Country’s 250th birthday.” He specifically highlighted the ground beef price reduction, stating it was lowered “by almost 15%,” among other products.
