Warwickshire 160 for 8 () clinches a thrilling one-run victory over Lancashire 159 for 8 ()
Natasha Wraith’s brilliant 83 propelled the Warwickshire Bears Women to a dramatic final‑ball thriller against Lancashire Thunder at Blackpool.
Wraith anchored the Bears’ innings, arriving at the crease in the third over after Abigail Freeborn’s catch off Morris yielded eight runs.
Undaunted by the mounting partnerships, Wraith targeted the wayward bowling of Darcy Carter, who conceded 27 runs in her two overs. Meanwhile, Morris and Weerappuli applied pressure, with Weerappuli dismissing Katie George for 23 via slow leg‑spin and Morris securing her second wicket when Georgia Redmayne was caught for nine.
Wraith accelerated to a half‑century in just 28 balls, delighting the crowd with a massive six that cleared the children’s nursery on the leg side. Weerappuli claimed another wicket when Em Arlott top‑edged for four, and Wraith’s innings ended spectacularly when Emma Lamb dived to take a fine catch at mid‑wicket.
Wraith scored 83 runs off 43 balls, including ten boundaries and two sixes. The crucial knock was underscored by two late wickets from Kate Cross, enabling the Bears to finish on 160 for 9.
Thunder’s chase got off to a disastrous start, with Eve Jones dismissed by Mary Taylor in the first over and Australian star Meg Lanning caught by Redmayne for ten off Georgia Davis’s delivery.
Lamb and Kesteven sparked a recovery, adding 48 runs before Lamb was bowled attempting a sweep against Millie Taylor for 27. The same shot dismissed captain Ellie Threlkeld leg‑before‑wicket for two, leaving the hosts at 97 for 4 at the halfway mark.
Kesteven took charge, reaching a half‑century in 38 balls and, alongside Seren Smale, began steering the innings toward what appeared to be a winning partnership.
When Smale was dismissed for 23 by Hannah Baker, Thunder were just 13 runs short of the target. The subsequent wicket of Carter for a duck, bowled by Surenkumar, added late drama. Kesteven and Cross both fell in the final over, leaving three runs needed off the last ball; Mary Taylor held her nerve and sparked celebrations.
