While the Commanders have officially retired their previous name and emblem, they remain available in some contexts.
According to WUSA reporter Eric Flack, the team’s official store is offering merchandise that features both the former name and the associated logo gear containing both the name and the logo.
Team officials maintain that the name and logo have been permanently discontinued. They told Flack that limited use of the branding is intended solely to protect trademark ownership, and they emphasize that this does not indicate any intention to revert to the former identity.
Nonetheless, the organization appears to be cautiously exploring the possibility of reviving both the name and logo.
Alternatively, the team may simply be catering to a segment of the fan base that longs for the return of the former branding.
Setting aside the intricacies of trademark law, it is conceivable that the team could retain its trademark indefinitely without relinquishing protection for the name and logo.
If the Commanders truly have no intention of returning to the former name and logo, the emphasis on preserving trademark rights suggests they are keeping the option open for a future revival.
