American Football Fuses ‘Boys Don’t Cry’ with ‘Never Meant’ in Live Session
American Football returned to the SiriusXM studio after their Pitchfork Music Festival CDMX set to perform a reinterpretation of the Cure’s 1979 classic “Boys Don’t Cry.” The band merged the track with their own enduring hit “Never Meant” and added a graceful trumpet solo. View the performance below.
The Cure—and particularly “Boys Don’t Cry”—has been fundamental to my growth as a songwriter and as a man,” said American Football singer‑guitarist Mike Kinsella. “For this piece it felt like the right fit for a group of melodically driven, emotionally open adults to deconstruct and personalize. We stripped away the bright chord progression, slowed the tempo considerably, and layered a mournful trumpet solo, yet the plaintive longing stays powerfully resonant.”
During their SiriusXMU session, the band also played “Wake Her Up” and “No Feeling” from this year’s American Football (LP4). After touring extensively behind the LP4 album, they still have a handful of additional shows scheduled later this year. Fans in Brazil, Argentina, Peru, and select US Eastern‑coast cities can attend performances in November and December.
