Lily Bassingthwaighte Wraps Chamari Athapaththu for Golden Duck as Brisbane Heat Claim WBBL Victory
Brisbane Heat secured a decisive win over the Hobart Hurricanes in the Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL) 2026‑27, restricting the opposition to 116/9 before they failed to finish building momentum in 18.2 overs. The match highlighted an outstanding bowling performance from 19‑year‑old Lily Bassingthwaighte, who taken three wickets in her four spells, ending with figures of 3/16 after the 19th over.
One of the defining moments came when Bassingthwaighte recorded a golden duck by getting Chamari Athapaththu out for a hat‑trick of two runs on the second over before bowling back to dismiss Lizelle Lee for two and bringing the young Sri Lankan pacer to the pavilion with a clean‑bowled duck.
Brisbane Heat won the toss and chose to bowl first, with Bassingthwaighte’s impact evident as early as the second delivery. She first removed Lizelle Lee for two runs with a caught‑and‑bowled before sending Athapaththu to the edge for a golden duck, leaving the Hurricanes struggling at 6/2. The Sri Lankan batter encountered just one ball before her stumps fell, snapping their innings and pushing the score to 13/3 after her next over.
After taking three early wickets, Rachel Trenaman and captain Heather Graham tried to stabilize the Heat’s innings. Trenaman tallied 25 from 33 deliveries, while Graham contributed 21 off 23 balls, but neither managed to forge a compelling partnership to close the gap.
Sarah Glenn dismissed Trenaman, and Lucy Hamilton removed Graham to further curb the scoring. Hamilton posted a brilliant 2/16, and a late effort from Maddy Green helped the Heat reach 116/9 in their allotted 20 overs.

Chasing 117, the Heat faced intermittent pressure from the Hurricanes, slipping to 74/5 at one point before the opposition tightened their control in the middle overs. The side then relied on Annie O’Neil and Hamilton to maintain order, keeping the lower order composed and guiding Brisbane to 119/6 in just 18.2 overs for a four‑wicket margin of victory.
