Wavves and Say Anything have teamed up to blend their takes on coastal pop‑punk in a new collaborative album titled Cherry Soda, slated for release on September 18 through I Surrender. The opening track, “Deathx1k,” is accompanied by a playful stop‑motion video directed by Jelly Eyes, showcasing claymation figures of Nathan Williams, Max Bemis, and several other characters.
Produced by Aaron Rubin, Cherry Soda comprises ten tracks and was co-written by Williams and Bemis. In a press release, Williams explained that he was inspired to collaborate after exploring Bemis’ catalog and discovering the breadth of his sound. He said he wanted to imagine what an early‑2000s Wavves emo record might sound like, describing the project as a “mall emo” record.
Bemis added that the songs emerged from each other’s circumstances. Though they are very different individuals, they collaborate well. As writers, they challenged themselves — Williams adopted a more emo tone while Bemis embraced a Wavves‑style approach. He noted that he may sing bleak lyrics, reminiscent of Nate’s trademark, yet Nate himself is a sweet, sensitive person.
